Overview
Brief History
Saanane Island National Park, established in 2013, is Tanzania’s smallest national park, covering 2.18 km² in Mwanza on Lake Victoria. Named after its former owner, Mzee Saanane Chawandi, it began as Tanzania’s first zoo in 1964, became a game reserve in 1991, and was later gazetted as a national park. Managed by TANAPA, it’s the only national park within a city, offering a unique urban wilderness experience.
Climate and Accessibility
Located 2 km southwest of Mwanza city center, the park is accessible by a 5-10 minute boat ride from TANAPA offices at Capri Point. Mwanza is reachable by road from Dar es Salaam (850 km, 12-14 hours), flights to Mwanza Airport, or ferries from Uganda and Kenya. The dry season (June-October, December-February) is best for visits, with temperatures of 20-28°C. The wet season (March-May, November) brings 800-1,000 mm rainfall, making trails slippery.
