Overview
Brief History
Mikumi National Park, established in 1964, spans 3,230 km² in central Tanzania. Named after the Mikumi palm trees, it was created to protect the Mkata Floodplain’s rich wildlife, including lions, elephants, and giraffes. Managed by TANAPA, its proximity to Dar es Salaam makes it a popular safari destination, often paired with visits to Selous (now Nyerere National Park).
Climate and Accessibility
Accessible by road from Dar es Salaam (283 km, 4-5 hours) or by charter flights to Mikumi airstrip. The dry season (June-October) is ideal for wildlife viewing, with temperatures of 20-30°C. The wet season (November-April) brings lush greenery but muddy roads, with 850-1,200 mm rainfall annually.
