Overview
Brief History
Burigi-Chato National Park, located in northwest Tanzania along Lake Burigi, was gazetted in 2019, expanding from the former Burigi Game Reserve. Covering 4,707 km², it’s one of Tanzania’s largest parks, encompassing diverse habitats from miombo woodlands to wetlands. Managed by TANAPA, it protects a vital ecosystem near Lake Victoria, hosting large populations of elephants, buffaloes, and antelopes, and serves as a critical conservation area for migratory species.
Climate and Accessibility
The park is accessible via road from Mwanza (150 km) or by charter flights to nearby airstrips. The climate features a wet season (March-May, October-November) and a dry season (June-September, December-February), with the dry season being optimal for wildlife viewing. Annual rainfall averages 800-1,200 mm, and temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C.
